OUR MINORS

ART HISTORY

We look to our past to make sense of our present. Art history gives you the opportunity to walk through the history of various parts of the world, viewing it through an artistic lens. By studying how art came to be what it is today, you will have a better understanding of what your art could be or even do in the future.

Art History at IWU’s Division of Art + Design is a comprehensive study of the aesthetic and philosophical theory regarding the creators and movements that started it all, from the roots of humanity to present day. You will participate in conversations about the meaning and purpose of art, while developing a thorough understanding of how art is utilized by cultures to express themselves. You will also have opportunities to join class trips to museums to experience first-hand the art you study in class.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Adding a minor in Art History adds to the professional experience of any art major as it allows them to have a broader understanding of where styles and ideas came from giving them an edge in knowledge and understanding. Art History minors may also have the opportunity to assist in faculty research and gain an understanding of professional scholarship through personal experience.

Lastly, to be fully prepared we recommend and help place our students into both service oriented and professional internships. These typically take place during the Junior and Senior year! Take a look here to learn more!
