TRAVEL COURSE EXPERIENCE

This interdisciplinary study-abroad course explores the relationship between art + design, engineering, technology, craftsmanship, and culture through direct observation and experience in Japan. Students will examine how Japanese designers, engineers, artists, craftspeople, and industries approach creativity, problem-solving, manufacturing, communication, and human experience.

Experience Design Firsthand

Through visits to universities, design exhibitions, technology-driven experiences, traditional craft studios, industrial facilities, cultural sites, and urban environments in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, students can investigate how art + design and engineering intersect Japanese culture and professional practice.

Learn by Doing

Students will document, analyze, and reflect upon their experiences through field research, visual documentation, journaling, discussion, and interdisciplinary assignments. Particular attention will be given to Japanese approaches to visual communication, user experience, materials, craftsmanship, technology, sustainability, systems thinking, and the integration of traditional and contemporary practices.

Expand Your Perception

The course culminates in a synthesis of observations and discoveries that asks students to consider how their experiences in Japan can influence their own creative and professional practice.
